A PPI (Plan Position Indicator) is obtained from a single radar scan (3600)
with the antenna elevation fixed at 00 (zero degree). Its maximum range is
450 km from the radar. Since a microwave pulse emitted by a radar propagates
approximately straight, the radar beam would be at 12 km height at a distance of 450 km.
Therefore, distances of radar observation beyond 450 km range would have little
significance for detection of meteorological targets, once the beam is above the
precipitation areas.
